Review: Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer offers a candid and thought-provoking view into the comedian’s mind. It’s a must-see for fans and newcomers alike.

Dave Chappelle’s new special felt like a strange preacher at a cultish gathering. It was underwhelming, preachy, and self-aggrandizing. He’s starting to sound like a weird, edgy uncle at a family dinner. The trans jokes are tired and he seems to be trying too hard to be edgy. It’s not cool or funny anymore, just a bit pathetic. Overall, it was disappointing and felt more like a motivational speaker seminar than a comedy special. 🤷‍♂️

Disappointing Performance

I’m not going to lie even though I’m a big Dave Chappelle fan, I was kind of underwhelmed with his recent special. It started off decently, but fell off in the middle and at the end. Throughout the performance, he seemed to veer into a more preachy and self-aggrandizing tone, which felt out of character for him. The venue and his attire also contributed to the odd feeling, making it seem almost culty in a way. It actually left me with a bit of an icky feeling, despite being a fan of Chappelle.

Cult-like Vibe

The overall performance felt cheap and overly preachy, with Chappelle coming across as full of himself. It was almost as if he was purposefully challenging the audience to understand his humor, which created a sense of disconnection. His humor seemed to take on a boomer vibe, which felt disjointed from his usual style.

"I almost feel like Dave might be trying to challenge the audience to get up to his level of humor."

Venue Choice

One positive aspect of the performance was Chappelle’s decision to film in a smaller theater rather than a large venue. This provided a more intimate setting and allowed the audience to feel closer to the action. However, this did little to offset the overall disappointing nature of the special.

Overemphasis on Personal Life

One glaring flaw was Chappelle’s repetitive mentions of his wife, which felt forced and out of place. It appeared as though he was attempting to address rumors by trying to prove his loyalty, which detracted from the comedic aspect of the show.

"I felt like he mentioned his wife too often. It felt like he kind of crowbar her in for a reason."

Tired Material

Furthermore, his jokes about the trans community felt outdated and uninspired. It seemed as though Chappelle was attempting to be edgy without effectively connecting with the audience. The overuse of these jokes portrayed a lack of understanding or empathy, contributing to the disappointment.

Disconnected Motivational Speaker Tone

The performance seemed to lack the humor Chappelle is known for and instead took on a motivational speaker vibe, which felt mismatched with the audience’s expectations. The inclusion of philosophical elements and the setup of the venue created a sense of detachment rather than camaraderie.

"It kind of felt like a Jordan Peterson thing. It was very almost cultish and preacher-like. I didn’t really like it to be honest."

Given the overall lackluster nature of the special, fans might find themselves disappointed with this particular performance. However, the choice of a more intimate venue may provide a unique perspective for those who appreciate this style of comedy. Overall, the special felt disconnected from Chappelle’s usual comedic brilliance.
